Impact of AI on Tasks, Roles and Required Capabilities / Skills in Software Development (en)

This survey examines how tasks, roles and required capabilities / skills in software development teams are changing through the use of AI. It is addressed to everyone working in a software development team, regardless of how much or how little AI you use yourself. Even if you hardly use AI at all, your answers matter.

Your responses will be analyzed anonymously. No names, email addresses, or IP addresses will be collected, and results will be reported exclusively in summary form, never for individual respondents. Please do not enter any personal information in the free-text fields, neither about yourself nor about others. There are no right or wrong answers; please answer spontaneously and honestly. The data will be analyzed for a master’s thesis at TU Darmstadt in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz Tech Innovation.

Definitions for the whole survey:
AI tools refers to all AI-supported tools in your working day, for example code assistants, chat assistants, AI review bots or AI agents.
AI agent refers to an AI system that plans and carries out multi-step tasks on its own, without a human triggering every individual step.
Tasks refers to the individual activities your work is made up of, for example writing code, clarifying requirements or reviewing AI output.
Roles refers to the bundles of tasks and responsibilities assigned to a person within the team, such as development, testing or architecture.
Required Capabilities / Skills refers to the knowledge and abilities needed to carry out the tasks of a role, both technical and non-technical.

This survey is anonymous.

The record of your survey responses does not contain any identifying information about you, unless a specific survey question explicitly asked for it.

If you used an identifying access code to access this survey, please rest assured that this code will not be stored together with your responses. It is managed in a separate database and will only be updated to indicate whether you did (or did not) complete this survey. There is no way of matching identification access codes with survey responses.

Privacy policy

This survey is part of a master's thesis at the Chair of Technology and Innovation Management, TU Darmstadt. It examines how tasks, roles and required skills in software development teams are changing through the use of AI.

Participation is voluntary. You can stop the survey at any time without any disadvantage to you. Once you have submitted your answers, they can no longer be withdrawn, because they are stored anonymously and can no longer be linked to you.

No personal data is collected. Your name, email address and IP address are not stored. The details on role, professional experience and company are used solely for statistical analysis in groups and do not allow any conclusions about individual people.

The data will be used only for this master's thesis and for academic publications arising from it. Results are reported in aggregated form only. The data will not be passed on to third parties for other purposes.
